The Affirmations of an Anointing
1 Samuel 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
Intro: It is God’s we will for every believer to be anointed with the Holy Ghost. Full and controlled.
- 1 John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
When we are, there are some characteristics that will be a result of it.
David is an Old Testament character that was anointed and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. There are some characteristics that he exemplified in his life that demonstrated the anointing.
I. He was Dedicated in His Relationships – 16:21-23
He was willing to stand before Saul, and love him greatly, and fight for him, and protect him, and him with an evil spirit half the time!
His dedication to Saul was not based on Saul’s character – it was based on David’s.
His service to those he loved was not based on them deserving it.
His relationship with people left them REFRESHED and WELL.
II. He was Diligent in His Responsibilities – 17:15
He was keeping the sheep BEFORE he was anointed,(16:11) as well as AFTER.
He was concerned about the sheep; he didn’t leave them uncared for and neglected.
His job was a priority.
An anointing doesn’t make you too big to do the little things; it enables you to do the little things.
III. He was Different in His Response – 17:24
At the voice of Goliath, all the men fled FROM. Vs. 24
David ran TOWARD Goliath. Vs. 48
An anointed man or woman or young person doesn’t RUN AWAY from conflict; they engage.
If a little bit of conflict or strife makes you run away, you are not standing the power and might of the Spirit!
STAND THEREFORE!!! Eph. 6 teaches
IV. He was Demanding in His Research – 17:26
Spirit-filled people ask questions.
- Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
What shall be done??
(NOTE: None of them had ever won any battles, so they didn’t know FIRSTHAND)
God give us a group of people that can answer the young people standing around!!
Folk that have won battles, killed giants, and can show the reward from personal experience.
These men could only go on what the king promised; they had no reward in their hands.
Who is this??
Carnal, self-centered people don’t ask because they don’t care.
Asking the right kind of questions will get you answers!!
NOTE: When he started out, he was thinking about the COMPENSATION – what shall be done unto him…?
When he discovered what was going on, he became motivated by the CAUSE.
His reaction to his COMPENSATION in 18:18 shows me that he didn’t kill Goliath for the girl, or the gold, but for GOD!!
V. He was Determined in His Resolve – 17:30
He asked several of them IS THERE NOT A CAUSE?
Every one of them answered him with the same answer.
Notice how LOSERS and COWARDS always want to cover their lack of character by attacking your character!!!
They refused to answer his question about the CAUSE.
They tried to make David the cause, but he refused to back down.
He didn’t get defensive with his brethren; he got offensive in the battle.
Don’t let critics and gainsayers distract you from the REAL battle.
VI. He was Dogmatic in His Recourse – 17:32
I love David’s attitude through this entire discourse.
He said in verse 32 – I WILL GO AND FIGHT
They said – THOU ART NOT ABLE!
David answered them in verse 37 – I ALREADY HAVE!!!!
He didn’t let anything or anybody talk him out of dealing with this giant.
By the way – it always help to have a few victories under your belt when a giant shows up!
RELISH the victories – REMEMBER them – REHEARSE them – and then REPEAT them!!
