Note from Pastor Shiflett -
If you have a teenager or a young person that you are concerned about in the area of friends, or influences, I highly encourage you to order the CD of this message. God gave me this message after several weeks of a great burden. God used this message as great as any message I've preached in a long time. The outline notes do not do this message justice. There are too many things in these verses to list on paper, but God did a real work in our church with this message.
Peer-Pressure Poison
II Samuel 13:1-5
Introduction: Peer Pressure relates to all ages. It affects everyone, but mainly harms those that have...
- A Lack of Control- followers instead of leaders
- A Lack of Confidence- not sure of their beliefs
- A Lack of Courage- cannot take a stand
Like poison, it slowly does its work...
The characteristics of peer pressure are...
1. Personal Questions- (v. 4) "...Why art thou..."
2. Prideful Remarks- (v.4) "...being the king's son..." The rules don't apply to everybody...
3. Pity Party- (v.4) "...lean from day to day..." Feeling sorry for yourself- you have it worse than anybody...live such a deprived life...
4. Pressured Confidentiality- (v. 4) "wilt thou not tell me..." The wrong crowd always wants you to tell them how you really feel about everything, so they can offer "advice".
5. Pretending- (v.5) "...Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick..."
6. Parental Deceit- (v.5) "...and when thy father cometh to see thee..."
7. Passions Reversed- (v.15) "Then Amnon hated her exceedingly..." He eventually came to hate the things he used to love. Application: Those that love old fashion worship, church, God and the people of God will eventually become to hate them if they continue to be influenced by peer-pressure and wrong friends.
